Born in Bessarabia, Moldova, on February 27, 1889, Samuel Bronfman was brought to Canada as an infant, later working in the hotel business and then starting up a whisky company. A merger with Joseph E. Seagram & Sons eventually yielded grand results, with the entity becoming a world liquor phenomenon. Bronfman, who also headed the Canadian Jewish Congress for decades, died on July 10, 1971.
Entrepreneur Samuel Bronfman was born on February 27, 1889, in Bessarabia, Moldova. A native of Canada, Bronfman was the son of Russian-Jewish emitters. A distiller, he became a wealthy man during the U.S. Prohibition by supplying American bootleggers with alcohol, a precious commodity in the 1920s. His Montreal-based distillery, Distillers Corp., Ltd. acquired Seagram & Sons in 1928.
The newly-formed conglomerate grew rapidly through the 1920s and '30s and became, by the 1940s, the largest distiller in either Canada or the United States. At the time of his death in 1971, Bronfman had amassed afortune of more than $400 million and was a major contributor to Zionist causes. After his death on July 10, Seagram was taken over by his son Edgar, and by his grandson Edgar, Jr. in 1989.
