Ségolène Royal was born on September 22, 1953, in Dakar, Senegal. She later entered French politics, joining the Socialist Party and working with President François Mitterrand. She was elected to the national assembly in the late '80s and was her party’s presidential candidate in 2007, eventually losing to Nicolas Sarkozy. She is the former longtime partner of current president François Hollande.
