Rufus King was an American lawyer and politician born on March 24, 1755, in Scarborough, Massachusetts. After graduating from Harvard at the top of his class in 1777, he served in the Revolutionary War, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1780. King was elected into local government just three years later. He represented Massachusetts in the Continental Congress and Constitutional Convention, and in 1787 was one of the framers and signers of the constitution. The next year, King became one of the state’s first U.S. senators in 1788 where he helped to create the First Bank of the United States. King was the Federalist Party’s last presidential candidate in 1816. He died on April 29, 1827, in New York, New York.
