Rubén Darío was a Nicaraguan poet who initiated the Spanish-American literary movement modernismo (modernism). His writing style upended the traditional long and grammatically complex Spanish sentence and instead was simple and direct. In 1898, he went to Europe as a journalist and diplomat. Observing world events, he was inspired and wrote his masterpiece, Cantos de vida y esperanza (1905).
