Robert Mugabe was born on February 21, 1924 in Kutama, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He was a leader of the liberation movement against white-minority rule. After a guerilla campaign led to British-supervised parliamentary elections, Mugabe's party won a landslide victory and he became prime minister. He has held this power, even as his popularity declines, through force and intimidation.
