Deep-sea archaeologist and oceanographer Robert Ballard is a former commander in the United States navy and a professor of oceanography at the University of Rhode Island. He is best known for discovering the wreck of the RMS Titanic in 1985, drawing on his experience with scuba diving and using small, unmanned submersibles controlled from a surface ship to scan the ocean floor.
