An acclaimed screen and stage performer in her native country, Kikuchi appeared in numerous Japanese films, music videos and TV shows before landing her first American film, 2006's Babel. Her performance as a fiercely defiant deaf mute earned her numerous honors, including a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nomination.
