Reinaldo Arenas was a Cuban poet, novelist and essayist who fled persecution under Fidel Castro and immigrated to the United States in 1980. His extraordinary novels are often described as unconventional for their dark undertones. His autobiography Before Night Falls was made into a film in 2000, with Javier Bardem playing Arenas.
