Background and Modeling Career

Rebecca Romijn was born on November 6, 1972, in Berkeley, California, to parents of Dutch descent, with her mother working as a teacher and her father as a toy and furniture craftsman. Though the couple divorced during Romijn's youth, they lived across the street from each other for years afterwards and she grew up with her younger sister in a progressive, freedom-to-explore environment.

Romijn had plans to study singing as a college undergraduate, but instead opted to travel to Paris after meeting a modeling scout. She established a successful, international modeling career, becoming famed for her Elle and Sports Illustrated magazine work as well as campaigns with Victoria's Secret and Tommy Girl.

Turns to Acting

Beginning to realize that continuing with modeling wasn't for her, Romijn turned to acting, having a sense of comedic chops from the television fare she watched during her childhood. She starred as the girlfriend of Ross (actor David Schwimmer) on the NBC series Friends in 1997 and, realizing that she loved performance, appeared on another sitcom, Just Shoot Me, a couple of years later. By the end of '97, she'd also begun hosting duties on MTV's House of Style.

Mystique in 'X-Men'

Romijn worked in film as well toward the latter half of the '90s, appearing as a bearded lady in Bob Saget's Dirty Work (1998) and as a model in the 1999 Austin Powers sequel. She then entered the science-fiction/comic world with her role as athletic, wily shape-shifter Mystique in X-Men (2000), a redhead clad in blue body paint and scales. She reprised the role in the blockbuster 2003 and 2006 sequels, with other films for the decade including Femme Fatale (2002) and Godsend (2004).

TV Work: 'Ugly Betty' and 'Eastwick'

Romijn continued her TV career. She starred on the 2006 comedic WB series Pepper Dennis before taking on the role of transgender character Alex "Alexis" Meade on the hit ABC series Ugly Betty. She also co-starred on Eastwick, a 2009 drama inspired by the John Updike work of the same name. By the new decade, with a role in Tyler Perry's Good Deeds (2012) as well, Romijn turned to more dramatic fare with TNT's King & Maxwell, a summer 2013 crime drama on which she played a P.I.

Romantic Life and Family

Romijn had met actor and musician John Stamos in 1994, and a few years later the couple wed in Beverly Hills. The marriage ended in 2005, with Romijn remaining private about specific circumstances.

She later met fellow actor Jerry O'Connell in Las Vegas, Nevada. The two had a laidback marriage ceremony in their backyard in 2007, going on to have twin girls in December of the following year.
