P.W. Botha was born on January 12, 1916, in Paul Roux, South Africa. He was elected to Parliament in 1948 at the start of the National Party’s time in power. After serving as defense minster, he was elected Prime Minister by Parliament and later State President. Botha supported the apartheid system, but was succeeded in 1989 by F.W. de Klerk who dismantled it.
