Italian Jewish chemist Primo Levi survived a year at Auschwitz during World War II against all odds. Upon his liberation in 1945 he began writing about his experience and has authored the works If This Is a Man, The Truce, and The Periodic Table. If This Is a Man has been described as his best work. His death in 1987 is argued to be a suicide.
