Profile

Stephen V was pope from 885 to 891. Upon being appointed, he refused to accept Photius as patriarch of Constantinople. It wasn't until the Byzantine emperor Leo VI the Wise took power that he was granted his request. Leo exiled Photius in 886. Pope Stephen witnessed outside attacks and internal struggles for the Italian crown, finally choosing Guy of Spoleto as Holy Roman emperor in 891.
