Dame Peggy Ashcroft was born on December 22, 1907 in Croydon, London. She performed with the Old Vic Theatre Company and portrayed Juliet in John Gielgud's production of Romeo and Juliet. Her film work includes Hitchcock's The 39 Steps and A Passage to India (for which she won an Academy Award). Ashcroft was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1956.
