Pedro I of Spain, also known as Dom Pedro is best known as the founder of the Brazilian empire and the first emperor of Brazil. Dom Pedro succeeded to move Brazil towards independence without bloodshed but his popularity from this soon waned by his war with Argentina and his notorious private life. He abdicated the throne to his son Dom Pedro II in 1831.
