Director, writer. Born August 13, 1955 in Cheam, Surrey, England. A graduate of Cambridge University, Greengrass is known primarily for his film adaptations of real-life events and his signature use of handheld cameras. A lover of filmmaking from a young age, he got his first taste of the director's chair in the 1980s while filming for the British current affairs program World in Action. Television dramas followed, including The One That Got Away about the Gulf War conflict and The Fix.
Greengrass's first major feature film, The Theory of Flight starring Kenneth Branagh and Helena Bonham Carter, debuted in 1998. Other notable fact-based films include 1999's The Murder of Stephen Lawrence, 2002's Bloody Sunday and 2004's Omagh. He then switched gears to direct The Bourne Supremacy, an enormously successful big studio film starring Matt Damon. He also helmed The Bourne Ultimatum, which is set to be released in 2007.
In 2006, Greengrass received much acclaim for United 93, a docudrama based on the September 11 hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93. The film won numerous honors, with Greengrass receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
