Synopsis

Pamela Smart was born on August 16, 1967, in Coral Gables, Florida. While working at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, New Hampshire, Smart had an affair with Billy Flynn, a 15-year-old student. She convinced him to murder her husband. Flynn carried out the crime in May 1990, making it look like a robbery. Smart was convicted in 1991 and is serving her sentence in New York without parole.

Murder

Convicted murderer Pamela Ann Smart (née Wojas) was born on August 16, 1967, in Coral Gables, Florida. Smart was a pretty, popular 22-year-old media services coordinator based at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, New Hampshire, where she also volunteered to teach a self-esteem class. In May 1990, she convinced her 15-year-old student and lover, Billy Flynn, to kill her husband, Gregory Smart. Flynn and his accomplices, Patrick Randall and Vince Lattime, Jr., killed Pamela's husband execution-style in his home and made it look like a robbery.

Conviction

The three young men struck a deal with prosecutors and were sentenced to prison terms in exchange for testimony that Pamela had instigated the plot. She was convicted of the crime in March 1991 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. She is serving her sentence in New York and maintains her innocence.

Smart's story was the basis for director Gus Van Sant's 1995 film To Die For starring Nicole Kidman. Captivated, an HB0 documentary on the case directed by Jeremiah Zagar, was released in 2014.
