Pablo Neruda was born on July 12, 1904, in Parral, Chile. His first book of poems was published in 1923. He worked as a diplomat and was drawn into the Spanish Civil War. On his return to Chile, Neruda was elected to the Senate but changes in the political climate forced him into exile. He eventually returned to Chile and died there in 1973.
