Born on February 19, 1473, in Toru, Poland, Nicholas Copernicus proposed the idea of a heliocentric (sun centered) solar system and the idea that the Earth, besides orbiting the Sun annually, also turns once daily on its own axis. Copernicus's theory had important consequences for later scientific thinkers, including such major figures as Galileo, Kepler, Descartes, and Newton.
