Nathan Hale was born in Coventry, Connecticut in 1755. He graduated from Yale University, then became a schoolteacher. When war began to brew in the American colonies, he joined a Connecticut regiment, served in the siege of Boston, and was made a captain in 1776. He was then captured by the British in New York City and hanged for espionage on September 21, 1776.
