Moms Mabley was born on March 19, 1894 in Brevard, North Carolina. She moved to Cleveland, Ohio and entered the “chitlin circuit” of African American entertainment venues. She later performed in Harlem's Cotton Club and was the first female comedian to appear at the Apollo Theater. Mabley appeared in films, on television and recorded two dozen comedy albums.
