Synopsis
Miloš Forman was born on February 18, 1932 in áslav, Czechoslovakia. In 1975 he directed One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which became only the second film in history to win Academy Awards in all the four major categories. His film Amadeus, a biography of Mozart,
won the Oscar for best picture and earned Forman his second Oscar for directing. Forman wrote Turnaround: A Memoir in 1994.
Profile
Director, screenwriter, actor. Born Jan Tomás Forman on February 18, 1932 in Cáslav, Czechoslovakia. Orphaned at a very young age after his parents died in Nazi concentration camps, Forman studied screenwriting at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. He directed several Czech comedies before moving to New York to teach film at Columbia University.
In 1975, one of Forman's first American projects was an adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The seminal film about life in an asylum won five Academy Awards including Best Director. Other notable films include Amadeus, which won eight Academy Awards, and the biopic The People vs. Larry Flynt. Forman remains one of the few foreign directors who has found success in the U.S. film industry.
