Michael McCary was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 16, 1971. He and his classmates formed the Grammy Award-winning group Boyz II Men. McCary's baritone voice always stood out on the boy band's ballads, dance hits and R&B grooves. The singer opted to leave Boyz II Men in 2003 due to problems stemming from scoliosis. In recent years, he's turned down reunion offers in order to focus on solo projects and acting.
"I disappeared off the face of the earth and it was impossible for people to find me."
Michael Sean McCary was born into a big north Philadelphia family on December 16, 1971. (His parents are Omarnetta Thomas and Robert McCary.) His hometown was known for criminal activity, but McCary found an outlet to keep him out of trouble: music. His deep-singing vocals paved his way into the Philadelphia High School for the Creative & Performing Arts. There he joined up with fellow high school students Nathan Morris, Marc Nelson, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman to form Boyz II Men.
At a Bell Biv DeVoe concert, the guys caught the attention of member Michael Bivins (also formerly of New Edition fame). Impressed, Bivins signed on to help produce Boyz II Men. All but Nelson (who quit) entered the studio to record their first album, Cooleyhighharmony. Its first single, "Motownphilly," went to No. 1 on the R&B charts and landed in the Top 5 on the pop charts.
The quartet went on to become masters at making hits, including "It's The End of the Road," which topped the pop charts for 13 weeks—breaking Elvis's 1956 record. In 1994, Boyz II Men's "On Bended Knee" replaced another of their songs, "I'll Make Love to You," for the No. 1 spot on the Hot 100 chart—a triumph previously achieved only by the Beatles and Elvis.
In 2003, Michael McCary left Boyz II Men. One of the major reasons for the performer's departure was the back pain he suffered from having scoliosis. In 2011, there was talk of a reunion for the group's 20th anniversary album, but it did not pan out.
Instead, McCary continues to explore his career options, including acting. He's had small parts in flicks like The Mannsfield 12 and Hoodlum. Additionally, he serves as chairman of the company 9th Street Music and Film, which focuses on making music, television shows and films. McCary enjoys advocacy work too and has been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, among other organizations.
