Maureen Stapleton was born in Troy, New York in 1925. A major interpreter of the plays of Tennessee Williams, her role as Serafina in The Rose Tattoo brought her great acclaim. One of the great US stage actresses, she also appeared in a number of films. Stapleton died in 2006.

Actress, born in Troy, New York. A major interpreter of the plays of Tennessee Williams, her role as Serafina in The Rose Tattoo (1951) brought her great acclaim. She followed with Flora in Twenty-Seven Wagons Full of Cotton (1955), Lady Torrance in Orpheus Descending (1957), and the turbulent Amanda Wingfield in a revival of The Glass Menagerie in 1965. Acclaimed as one of the great US stage actresses, she has also appeared in a number of films.
