Mary Steenburgen is an Oscar-winning actress best known for her roles in 'Melvin and Howard' and 'Parenthood.'

Synopsis

Mary Steenburgen was born on February 8, 1953 in Newport, Arkansas. She moved to New York City in 1972 to study acting and improvisation. She won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1980 for her performance in Melvin and Howard and starred in the films Miss Firecracker, Parenthood, and Philadelphia. She was married to Malcolm McDowell from 1980 to 1990. She married Ted Danson in 1995.

Film Career

Mary Steenburgen was born on February 8, 1953 in Newport, Arkansas. A fan of the stage from early in life, Steenburgen moved to New York City in 1972 to study acting and perform improvisational comedy. She was soon cast in films and won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1980 for her performance in Melvin and Howard — which, at the time, was only the third film she had ever starred in.

Gentle, intelligent and possessing a scathing wit, Steenburgen has turned in several memorable roles in big and small films throughout her career, including Miss Firecracker (1989), Parenthood (1989), Philadelphia (1993) and Life as a House (2001). Other more recent films she's been in are: Four Christmases (2008), The Proposal (2009), The Help (2011), and Last Vegas (2013), a comedy in which she was able to express her inner chanteuse, as well as her self-described late blooming talents for song writing; (she co-wrote the song she performs in the film.) 

Television Career

Steenburgen has also been involved in several successful television projects, including the miniseries Gulliver's Travels (1996) with husband Ted Danson and Joan of Arcadia (2003). Some of her more recent small screen projects include HBO's Bored to Death (2011), FX's dark comedy Wilfred (2011-2013) and Justified (2014), and NBC's 30 Rock (2012-2013). In June 2014 it was announced she would play the recurring role of Delia on Netflix's third season of Orange Is the New Black. She currently stars in Will Forte's Fox comedy, The Last Man on Earth.

Steenburgen has nurtured an active stage career as well, appearing on Broadway and in London. 

Activism

Among Steenburgen's philanthropic pursuits, she, along with Danson, are heavily involved in preserving the oceans through the organization Oceana, which helps to educate and change policy on overfishing around the world. 

Personal Life

Steenburgen was married to Malcolm McDowell from 1980 to 1990. They have two children together. In 1995 she married Ted Danson.
