Actress. Born February 8, 1953 in Newport, Arkansas. A fan of the stage from early in life, Steenburgen moved to New York City in 1972 to study acting and perform improvisational comedy. She was soon cast in films and won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 1980 for her performance in Melvin and Howard.
Gentle, intelligent and possessing a scathing wit, Steenburgen has turned in several memorable roles in big and small films throughout her career, including 1989's Miss Firecracker, 1989's Parenthood, 1993's Philadelphia and 2001's Life as a House. She has also been involved in several successful television projects, including the miniseries Gulliver's Travels with husband Ted Danson and Joan of Arcadia.
Steenburgen has nurtured an active stage career as well, appearing on Broadway and in London. She was married to Malcolm McDowell from 1980 to 1990. She married Danson in 1995.
