Born in Ohio in 1817, nurse Mary Ann Bickerdyke worked tirelessly to improve conditions for wounded soldiers during the American Civil War. Her efforts earned her the nickname 'Mother' Bickerdyke and she eventually built over 300 field hospitals. Later in her career she became an advocate on behalf of U.S. veterans.
