Marie Dressler was born November 9, 1868 in Cobourg, Canada. Dressler made her Broadway debut in The Robber of the Rhine (1892). She had a successful silent film career until her support of the 1919 Actor's Equity Strike, which damaged her opportunities for roles. In the 1930's she signed on with MGM and her fame returned, winning an Oscar in 1931.
