Maria Mitchell was born August 1, 1818 in Nantucket, Massachusetts. She studied astronomy on her own time with the support of her father. In 1847 she established the orbit of a new comet gaining her recognition in astronomy circles. She went on to take a position at Vassar College and took pictures of sunspots.© 2013 A+E Networks.
