After film school, Louis Malle worked as an assistant to filmmaker Robert Bresson and co-directed the documentary Le Monde du silence (1956) with underwater explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Malle made his first feature film, Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (Frantic), the next year.
