Lily Allen was born in London, England on May 2, 1985. Allen was one of the first pop stars to emerge through social media, developing a fan base via MySpace before the release of her 2006 debut album, Alright, Still, which features the hit song "Smile." Allen is also known for her feuds with other celebrities, and her penchant for public intoxication at industry events.

Early Life

Lily Allen was born in Hammersmith, London, to Welsh comedian Keith Allen and English film producer Alison Owen. When Allen was 4 years old, her father left the family. Growing up, Allen spent time with many of her parents' famous friends, forming an especially close bond with former Clash singer Joe Strummer. She is the sister of actor Alfie Owen-Allen.

Allen was expelled from several schools for drinking and smoking. While she did not care for the structure of school, Allen did cultivate a strong love for music, taking singing lessons and aplaying piano, violin, guitar and trumpet.

Musical Career

Lily Allen signed with London Records in 2002. When the executive who had signed her left, however, the label lost interest. She then studied to become a florist, but changed her mind and returned to music.

In 2005, Allen signed with Regal Recordings, though the label had scarce resources to promote her work. Allen then took matters into her own hands, posting demos on MySpace. The demos attracted thousands of listeners, and brought Allen mainstream media attention for the first time.

Allen's debut album, Alright, Still, was released in July 2006. Most of the tracks had been previewed on her MySpace page and one of them, "Smile," had become a hit on iTunes. The full album was released in the United States in January 2007, entering the Billboard charts at No. 20 and garnering a Grammy Award nomination.

It's Not Me, It's You was released in February 2009. It debuted at No. 1 in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, and spawned hit singles like "The Fear."
