Early Life
Lee Ann Remick was born on December 14, 1935, in Quincy, Massachusetts. The daughter of a department store owner, Lee Remick began dancing at a young age. She attended Barnard College and the Actors?? Studio, and made her debut on Broadway in 1953's Be Your Age.
Acting Career
Remick first appeared on film with Andy Griffith in Elia Kazan's A Face in the Crowd (1957). In 1962, she starred opposite Jack Lemmon in Days of Wine and Roses, earning an Oscar nod for her performance as an alcoholic wife. Other notable films include 1957's The Long Hot Summer, 1959's Anatomy of a Murder and 1976's The Omen.
The sophisticated and elegant actress also enjoyed a successful stage career, particularly in her collaborations with friend Stephen Sondheim. She appeared in his short-lived 1964 musical, Anyone Can Whistle, as well as the 1985 concert version of his musical, Follies. Remick's most acclaimed stage performance was a starring turn in Frederick Knott's thriller Wait Until Dark in 1966. Her last appearance on stage was in 1991's A Little Night Music, in Los Angeles.
Remick also starred on TV, mostly in historical dramas, earning seven Emmy Award nominations throughout her career.
Personal Life
Remick was married to TV producer Bill Colleran from 1957 to 1868, and they had two children. She was married to British film producer Kip Gowans from 1970 until her death of kidney and liver cancer on July 2, 1991, at age 55.
