Kiran Desai was born Sept. 3, 1971 in New Delhi, India. One of her early stories appeared in the collection Mirrorwork (1997). She left Columbia University for several years to write her first novel, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard (1998). It received a 1998 Betty Trask Prize from the British Society of Authors.
