Little is known about Kim Jong-il's early life, and what is known comes from official North Korean Government documents and a cult of personality, meaning his life is told in a way that promotes his leadership. Known as "dear leader," he controlled North Korea with an iron fist until his death in December 2011, when he was succeeded by his son, Kim Jong-Un.
