Khabul Khan was born c. 1100 in north central Mongolia. He was the great grandfather of the great Mongol ruler Genghis Khan. Khabul Khan successfully defended Mongol tribes against invasions by the neighboring Jin Dynasty during the 10th century. Under his leadership, the Borjigon Mongols emerged as central Mongolia's leading clan by 1120.

Khabul Khan was brilliant ruler in his own right, successfully defending Mongol tribes against invasions by the neighboring Jin Dynasty during the 10th century.

Khabul Khan was one of the first rulers to unite tribes in fighting invaders and to introduce diplomacy and negotiation among warring clans. Under his leadership, the Borjigon Mongols emerged as central Mongolia's leading clan by 1120. During the next three decades, Khabul Khan united Mongol tribes to form a more unified tribal force in a series of raids against the Jin Dynasty.
