Actress June Foray was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on September 18, 1917. She began work as a radio actress at a young age. As an adult, she branched out into animated films and television shows, providing the voices for characters including Rocky the Squirrel and Witch Hazel. Her work appears in many classic Disney, Looney Tunes and Hanna-Barbera productions.
June Foray was born June Lucille Forer on September 18, 1917, in Springfield, Massachusetts. She began contributing voice work to local radio stations as a young teenager. Upon graduating from high school, she moved with her family to Los Angeles, California.
Foray soon launched a radio career on the West Coast, with regular appearances on national series, including The Jimmy Durante Show. She also provided the voices of Midnight the Cat and Old Grandie the Piano, characters on The Buster Brown Program, between 1944 and 1952.
In the 1940s, Foray began to work in films, primarily voicing animated characters. She played Lucifer the Cat in the Walt Disney Film Cinderella and a mermaid in Peter Pan. She also contributed to Woody Woodpecker cartoons and played the role of Granny in the Tweety and Sylvester series. Director Chuck Jones cast her as Witch Hazel in a series of Looney Tunes animated programs. Foray also worked on a number of Hanna-Barbera shows, including The Flintstones, Tom and Jerry and The Jetsons. She played Rocky and Natasha, two of the leading roles, on The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. Other notable parts include Mother Nature on The Smurfs and Cindy Lou Who in the Christmas classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Foray also provided the voice of the original "Chatty Cathy" doll.
Foray has been publicly recognized for her contributions to film and television. In 1995, the Hollywood chapter of the Association Internationale du Film d'Animation established the June Foray Award, which is awarded to "individuals who have made a significant and benevolent or charitable impact on the art and industry of animation."
Contemporary writers and animators have also honored Foray, who has been a guest star on The Simpsons and Family Guy in roles referencing her earlier work.
Foray has also continued to voice her classic characters on occasion. In 2000, she reprised her role as Rocky in the live-action/CGI animated film The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle. In 2011, she again played Granny on the Cartoon Network series The Looney Tunes Show. Foray won an Emmy Award the following year for her performance as Mrs. Cauldron on The Garfield Show.
June Foray met Hobart Donavan when they worked together, she as a performer and he as the head writer, on The Buster Brown Program. The two married in 1954 and remained together until Donavan's death in 1976.
