Profile

Joseph II was at first coruler with his mother, Maria Theresa then sole ruler of the Austrian Habsburg dominions. He sought to introduce administrative, legal, economic, and ecclesiastical reforms—with only measured success. He tried to establish peace in the Austrian Netherlands but failed as he did in Hungary, where his refusal to be crowned had deprived him of a legal foundation for his reign.
