Joseph Banks was born on February 13, 1743, in London, England, and would go on to explore the natural world, including areas like Newfoundland and Iceland. He became an active proponent of the sciences in British culture and was a noted botanist, becoming president of the Royal Society for more than three decades. He died on June 19, 1820, in London.
