Johns Hopkins was born May 19, 1795, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. At the age of 17, he went to live with his uncle in Baltimore and learn the wholesale grocery business but quarreled with his uncle in 1819. Johns Hopkins thereupon went into business. The company prospered, making him a wealthy man. Before his death, he organized two corporations, one for a hospital and one for a university.
