The family moved to San Francisco when he was young. It was there he displayed a love and aptitude for music. Mathis studied with a voice coach for six years. During college, Mathis sang in a jazz band and later won a recording contract and engagements at prestigious New York clubs after an audition in San Francisco in 1955.
