Profile

John Hope Franklin first gained international attention with the publication of From Slavery to Freedom. His other works treating aspects of the American Civil War include The Militant South, 1800–1861, Reconstruction: After the Civil War, and The Emancipation Proclamation. He also edited three books of the Civil War period. In 1995 he was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
