Commissioned captain of the brig Lexington in 1776, John Barry distinguished himself by capturing the British tender Edward. He continued to win significant maritime victories during the American Revolution. Because he trained so many young officers who were later celebrated, he was nicknamed the “Father of the Navy.” By the end of his career he was senior officer of the navy.
