Johannes Rau was born on January 16, 1931, in Wuppertal-Barmen, West Germany. First elected to the North Rhine–Westphalia state parliament in 1957, he also served as mayor of Wuppertal and became a member of the Social Democratic Party Executive, state minister for science and research, then minister president. He was chair of the party state organization before his election as federal president in 1999, serving until 2004. He died in Berlin, Germany, in 2006.

Political Career
Born in Wuppertal-Barmen, West Germany, on January 16, 1931, Johannes Rau worked as a bookseller's apprentice and publishing company manager before becoming a full-time politician.
First elected to the North Rhine–Westphalia state parliament in 1957 (serving until 1999), he also served as mayor of Wuppertal (1969–70) and became a member of the Social Democratic Party Executive (1968–99). Minister for science and research in the state government (1970–8), and then minister president (1978–98), he was chair of the party state organization from 1977 to 1999. Rau was elected president of Germany in 1999, and served in that position until 2004.
He died on January 27, 2006, in Berlin, Germany.
