Personal Background
Jill Kelley grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with her twin sister. Her family, which had immigrated from Lebanon, ran a restaurant in the area. She later married Dr. Scott Kelley, a cancer surgeon. The couple has three daughters and live in Tampa, Florida. The Kelleys are very active in their community's social scene,
often hosting events at their home. General David Petraeus and his wife Holly have been their guests on several occasions. Kelley has also served as a volunteer social liaison to her local military facility, the MacDill Air Force Base.
Role in Petraeus Scandal
Kelley unwittingly helped expose the extramarital affair between General David Petraeus, then head of the CIA, and his biographer Paula Broadwell. She had turned to the FBI for assistance after receiving some disturbing emails. These anonymous messages were allegedly traced back to Broadwell, who viewed Kelley as some type of threat to her relationship to Petraeus. Kelley was not involved with Petraeus, according to news reports. During their investigation, the FBI found emails that revealed details of Broadwell's relationship with Petraeus.
Petraeus resigned his position with the CIA on November 9, 2012, and acknowledged his affair with Broadwell. Initially, Jill Kelley's name was kept from the press, but she was later revealed to be the person who had received the threatening messages. Kelley has tried to stay out of the media spotlight surrounding this scandal. The Kelleys, through a representative, issued a statement, which read in part, "We and our family have been friends with General Petraeus and his family for over five years. We respect his and his family's privacy and want the same for us and our three children," according to USA Today.
