Jerome Kern (b. 1885 in New York, NY) was a U.S. composer of musical theater who wrote the score for Show Boat (1927), the first American musical with a serious plot drawn from a literary source. He is also known for composing the music for The Cat and the Fiddle (1931), as well as songs for several Hollywood films, including "The Song Is You," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," and "Ol' Man River."
