Jenny Shipley is a New Zealand politician who became the country's first woman prime minister.

Synopsis

Born on February 4, 1952, in Gore, New Zealand, Jenny Shipley rose to power through the conservative National Party before gaining a Parliament seat in 1987, later taking on ministerial posts. She challenged the party leadership of James Bolger and became her country's first woman prime minister in December, 1997. She lost to the more left-leaning Labour Party head, Helen Clark, in 1999.
