Jean Foucault was born on September 18, 1819, in Paris, France. Mostly home-educated, he was drawn to the sciences at a young age and eventually became a physicist. He is best known for inventing the Foucault pendulum, a device that demonstrates the Earth's rotation. In 1850, Foucault accurately measured the speed of light. He also discovered eddy currents and invented a system for testing surface defects in telescopes. Foucault died in 1868.
