Jean Arthur (b. Oct. 17, 1900 in Plattsburgh, NY) was an American actress, known for her no-nonsense heroine roles and her throaty voice in Hollywood comedies of the 1920s-1940s. She won an Academy Award nomination for her performance in The More the Merrier, and also starred in You Can't Talk It With You and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Later in her life she taught drama at Vassar College.
