Born in New York in 1836, Jay Gould was a leading American railroad executive and financier who history has vilified as a ruthless, archetypal robber barron of the 19th century. During the American Civil War, Gould bought the Rutland and Washington Railway, later becoming the director of the Erie Railroad. Gould is partly responsible for "Black Friday" of 1869. He left a fortune worth $77 million.
