Jane Pierce was born on March 12, 1806, in Hampton, New Hampshire. She married Franklin Pierce in 1834. In 1852, she became first lady when Franklin was elected U.S. president. Her son died in a train accident right before her husband took office. During his presidency, she started the tradition of having a Christmas tree at the White House. She died at age 57 on December 2, 1863, in Andover, Massachusetts.
