James Patterson was born on March 22, 1947 in Newburgh, New York. Patterson published his first novel in 1996, after retiring from a successful career in advertising. The prolific author set a pace of two books per year, setting records for the most consecutive hardback titles to reach No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list.

Novelist, born in Newburgh, New York, on March 22, 1947. Patterson left his life as an advertising executive in 1996 in order to focus on becoming a serious novelist. Patterson published his first novel, The Thomas Berryman Number, in 1976. His best-selling detective novel, Along Came A Spider (1993), introduced FBI Agent Alex Cross who he featured in several later books, including Kiss The Girls (1995), Pop Goes the Weasel (1999), Violets are Blue (2001), Mary, Mary (2005), and Cross (2006).
Patterson and his wife, Susan, currently reside in Palm Beach, Florida. They have one son, Jack.
